Overview

The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique 12-digit identifier issued by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) to manage an employee’s Provident Fund (PF) account. It remains the same throughout an individual’s career, regardless of job changes, enabling easy tracking and transfer of PF balances across different employers.

Process of UAN Generation

Employer Registration

The employer must register with the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) and obtain an Establishment Code.

Submission of Employee Details

The employer submits KYC details (such as PAN, Aadhaar, and bank account) of the employees to EPFO.

UAN Allocation

EPFO generates and assigns a unique 12-digit UAN to each employee based on the submitted information.

Employee UAN Activation

The employee activates the UAN on the EPFO portal by verifying personal and KYC details.

Linking with PF Account

Once activated, the UAN is linked to the employee’s PF account, enabling access to balance, contributions, and withdrawal services.
